Product Overview
These tapers come from Helsher House in Manlius, New York, which has made candles for historic museums for 50 years, so they're about as authentic as candles get. Each one is hand-dipped, layer by layer, on a candle carousel dating to around 1850. Real bayberry wax is naturally scented, and it's subtle: think a faint whiff of evergreen and dried herbs, a little earthy and a little spicy, like a walk through the woods in December. It doesn't announce itself; it just makes the room feel like the holidays. The gift box makes the pair a ready-made hostess present, the kind that shows you put in more effort than the bottle of wine everyone else brought.
What Makes It Special
The tradition comes with its own rhyme: "A bayberry candle burned to the socket brings health to the home and wealth to the pocket." In other words, don't blow it out early. Colonial candlemakers boiled bayberries to skim off the wax, and it took a lot of berries to make a single candle, which is why bayberry tapers were saved for special nights.
